tiny ‘monster’ surviving

tumultuous storms

and seething tide

anchored by prehensile tail

to estuary sea grass

in nearly every ocean

others cling, blending with the color

of living coral, hiding from prey

and seeking even tinier crustaceans

to click-slurp from crevasses

noisily sucking up meals through

tube=like mouths

the tale of generations depends

on those agile tails entwining as female

deposits eggs in male’s brood pouch

he carries to term and gives birth

more than a hundred wee strange fish

‘monsters’ we’ve named sea horses

as a retired physician, i have needed to talk with many persons about end of life. And then I cared for my husband for more than five years.
